BEEcon
BEEcon is a collaborative concept with Hackney Garden Honey for a movable rooftop beehive.
BEEcon is a multisensory pavilion structure designed for both humans and honey bees. Sat on a rooftop anywhere, the timber structure and translucent rope cladding appear as a giant rooftop beehive, interacting with new articulated street art on walls below to evoke childhood stories come to life through moving idents. The pavilion itself is home to three types of hives; solitary, observation and a centrally located national hive. The hives are integrated and distributed around the pavilion to occupy all levels, whilst at low-level planters and seating enhance engagement, create a mini ecosystem and provide amenity. Constructed of CNC cut prefabricated timber components with natural sisal rope secured with temporary boating knots, BEEcon has been designed transiently, so it can move around like a real beehive.
