Fallen Leaves Pavilion
The Fallen Leaves Pavilion was a collaborative with New Office of Works for the City of Dreams Pavilion in New York City.
Cooling towers associated with the coal industry have an established iconic form, yet as symbols of fossil fuels they have negative connotations to many. The design rationale for the pavilion was to make a passive political statement, addressing two of the world’s big climate related issues - waste and energy. The proposal's form mimics a cooling tower, with a bamboo structure and pressed palm leaf plates and bowls used as decorative cladding. A bi-product of palm oil industry waste, and a biodegradable form of disposable crockery, the use of naturally fallen pressed palm leaf plates and bowls seeks to promote their use over that of single-use plastics.
