SWARM

SWARM is a collaborative concept with Hackney Garden Honey for a multi-sensory and transient pavilion conceived as a rooftop beehive for use by both humans and honey bees.

Sat on a rooftop, the oversized beehive timber structure with translucent rope cladding interacts with wall art below to evoke idents of childhood stories come to life.

The pavilion itself is home to three types of hives; solitary, observation and a national hive. The hives are integrated and distributed around the pavilion to occupy all levels, whilst low-level planters interspersed with seating enhance engagement, create a mini ecosystem and provide amenity for people.

Constructed of CNC cut prefabricated plywood components with threaded natural sisal rope secured using temporary boating knots, SWARM has been designed transiently and for disassembly, so that the hive can swarm / the pavilion can be relocated.
